In late 2015 I finished writing my debut novel Under the Almond Tree.

Shortly afterwards I signed with literary agent Jonny Geller  CEO at Curtis Brown Group (thanks in part to both PitchCB and getting listed in the Mslexia Novel Award).

The book was acquired by Two Roads Books (ed. Lisa Highton, Two Roads Books/John Murray Press).  It will be published in translation in 2017/18 including in France, China, Denmark, Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Spain and Italy. Read more here.

I am currently working on my second novel The Plantation House – you can hear a little about it and my journey to publication here in my BBC interview:  (listen from 26 mins in)

Before writing full-time, I was the Executive Director for PEN International, the leading worldwide writers’ association campaigning on the promotion of literature and freedom of expression. You can learn more about PEN here:

I have also served as Director of the Global Girls Fund which supports girls’ empowerment, equality and access to learning and education worldwide.

Previous experience includes working with young people both in the UK and internationally on education and development projects, working on peace and conflict issues, and human rights work.  I hold an MSc in Global Politics and have studied human rights law, international political economy, and development economics.  I read Modern & Medieval Languages at Cambridge University.

I am an activist for girls’ education and have traveled widely, campaigning on human rights and education issues around the world.  My writing reflects these interests and concerns about our world and how we live.
